infection and inflammation involving the lining of the brain and central nervous system. the form of mental inkitis in the patients is not transmitted from person-to-person. the case is under investigation and have no relation to the more common forms of bacterial or viral meningitis. in this case, health officials believe a fungus is responsible. the victim's received steroids injections for back pain. health officials say the drugs suspected in the outbreak was made by a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts. last week, the company issued a recall of three lots of the steroids. >> there is not a lot of experience in treating this. we're getting the best experts together to try and formulate what people think might be a good course of action. >> reporter: chording to the centers for disease control and prevention, the other cases were reported in virginia, maryland, florida, and north carolina. more cases are expected to appear the coming days. >> the most common symptoms of meningitis include headache, neck stiffness with fever,

confusion or altered consciousness, vomiting and an inability to tolerate light or loud noises. sometimes non-specific symptoms are present like irritability and drowsiness, especially in small children and a rash may indicate a specific cause of meningitis. screening for type two diabetes doesn't appear to reduce the risk of death to the general population. researchers looked at the number of deaths over a 10 leave year period, among more than 20,000 people on the high risk and found the overall rate was no lower than the group that had no screening. and the benefits might be smaller than expected and they could be increased by the screening for cardiovascular risk factors along with diabetes. another new study shows people with heart disease may increase their risk of developing a heart rhythm problem. the more an older person with an existing heart problem drank, the more likely they were to develop an arrhythme at
